I have been reading books, and talking about books, and trying to get others to read books for as long as I can remember.
As a junior high language arts teacher for years, one of my favorite challenges was turning kids who came into my classroom in the fall declaring, "I hate reading," into readers. I thought it was all about finding the right book and giving them permission to ditch a book that they just did not like.
That is what grownup readers do, right?
We all want to know things. Aren't we all naturally curious? I know I sure am, but I don't like to read a book when someone tells me that I have to read it.
That is probably why I haven't read very many classic books.
I blame it on my inner brat. She keeps me from lots of good things and I really need to get a grip on her.
Anyhoo.
I have some delicious books to share with you today.
One of the very first blogs I read every day was Big Mama. That was back in the day when she would critique American Idol with her dry wit. I can only imagine what she would say now that they have totally ruined the show with (forgive me if this sounds harsh) that annoying Nikki Minaj.
And lame talent.
Melanie has written her first book, Sparkly Green Earrings, which has made the New York Times Bestseller list. This week you can buy a Kindle version for $5. I don't know how long the price will last, but I bought the book, started it last night, and have been reading off and on this afternoon. It is really good, and Melanie has a sweet, sweet heart. She is funny and touching, too. Here is the link on Amazon.
The next book is by one of my all time favorite authors, Maeve Binchy. I was so sad the other day when I learned she had passed away months ago. This book is her last book, ever, so I am kind of saving it for when I have time to sit down and enjoy it.
I got my copy at Target, but you can, of course, find it on Amazon.
If you have read either of these, please give me your two cents worth. I value your opinions!
I liked this post... yes, some of those judges...yikes. old Paula Abdul was skied up most of the time,I thought. I can't believe some of those people were moved on to the finals away. Some are just good glee club singers or karoke. I am reading a James Patterson book right now. Three days and I have read 5 pages. oooo, like in school, like the old days...xoxo,Susie

Hi Susan, oh Maeve Binchy, one of my all time favorites. I have reread many of her books and will do a library search for her new (last ) book. Her characters are just so real. I don't remember the author, but 'Saving CeeCee Honeycut' is a beautiful book.
ReplyDeleteAlways glad to read your blog too. Blessings and smiles, Emilou :-)
My dear Susan,
ReplyDeleteI love to read too. Whenever I can, I have my nose buried in a book :) There is such joy and relaxation with a book.
Hugs to you,
Stephanie
Thank you for the book recommendations. I read everyday, it's my favourite hobby :)
ReplyDeleteOur library ladies did a tribute to Maeve Binchy after her pasing. I am reading Jodi Picoult, The Storyteller right now. She is a good author. I have been trying to make myself go back and read 2 classics a year. Some are great and others so, so.
