I have been reading books, and talking about books, and trying to get others to read books for as long as I can remember.
As a junior high language arts teacher for years, one of my favorite challenges was turning kids who came into my classroom in the fall declaring, "I hate reading," into readers. I thought it was all about finding the right book and giving them permission to ditch a book that they just did not like.
That is what grownup readers do, right?
We all want to know things. Aren't we all naturally curious? I know I sure am, but I don't like to read a book when someone tells me that I have to read it.
That is probably why I haven't read very many classic books.
I blame it on my inner brat. She keeps me from lots of good things and I really need to get a grip on her.
Anyhoo.
I have some delicious books to share with you today.
One of the very first blogs I read every day was Big Mama. That was back in the day when she would critique American Idol with her dry wit. I can only imagine what she would say now that they have totally ruined the show with (forgive me if this sounds harsh) that annoying Nikki Minaj.
And lame talent.
Melanie has written her first book, Sparkly Green Earrings, which has made the New York Times Bestseller list. This week you can buy a Kindle version for $5. I don't know how long the price will last, but I bought the book, started it last night, and have been reading off and on this afternoon. It is really good, and Melanie has a sweet, sweet heart. She is funny and touching, too. Here is the link on Amazon.
The next book is by one of my all time favorite authors, Maeve Binchy. I was so sad the other day when I learned she had passed away months ago. This book is her last book, ever, so I am kind of saving it for when I have time to sit down and enjoy it.
I got my copy at Target, but you can, of course, find it on Amazon.
If you have read either of these, please give me your two cents worth. I value your opinions!
