Let me back up and begin at the beginning-you know, they say that is a very good place to start.
I LOVE Diane Keaton!
I think she is adorable and funny with a great sense of style.
And she wears a white shirt like no one else.
When she makes a new movie, I almost always go to the theater to see it. So when my teacher buds decided to attend a matinee showing of her latest movie, The Big Wedding, I waved my hand in the air and said, "Me, too! Me, too!"
The movie is loaded with stars....Susan Sarandon, Catherine Heigl, Robert De Niro Amanda Seyfried...even Robin Williams makes an appearance.
Should be good, right?
Not to me.
Whoever wrote this movie must hate the Catholic church. The movie makes fun of Jesus and those who love Him, priests, confession, marriage, divorce, sobriety.....and those were the things I caught while I was trying to digest all this anti-Christian propaganda.
Are there people on the planet any more stupid than Christians, especially Catholics? Not if you believe the line presented in this film.
I am not a Catholic, but it doesn't matter. I am a Christian.
This is what confuses me...
Why is it ok, even cool, to present GOD and His followers as buffoons? I don't see this being done to other religious groups. I see the media and "society" bending over backwards not to be offensive to them.
And is it really necessary to say the "f" word a million times in a movie about a WEDDING? The word doesn't shock me anymore, but I don't know a lot of people who use it in every sentence.
Get out the thesaurus and broaden your vocabulary, screenwriters! It makes your characters look stupid.
I sat through the whole thing with my friends and I laughed occasionally. There were even some good parts. The second generation in this family seemed to have TONS more sense than their parents, and maybe that is the whole point.
I loved the setting of the film and the way Diane Keaton and Susan Sarandon dressed. The groom's sister also wore an adorable dress to the wedding, so kudo's to the costume designer!
Reports are out there that prove persecution of Christians is on the rise worldwide, and that is going to continue, I suspect. Our own culture is giving permission for "soft" persecution now, but I pray that it stops right there.
If you have seen the movie, what did you think? Am I being too sensitive?
I have to agree with your statement about society and media bending over backwards not to offend other religious groups, but in the meantime they are offending Christians while doing this.
ReplyDeleteDuring Christmas time I heard a story about calling a Christmas tree a holiday tree so they wouldn't offend anyone! That just broke my heart.
Heather
I haven't seen the movie, however I don't think you are being sensitive. No one likes to see their religion or ethnicity parodied in a movie. It's meant to shock and take a low blow for laughs. As for the F word, I expect to see it in action films, but not so much in comedies.
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
Well I won't be seeing it now. I am so weary of the F word. I have to agree that society needs to grow up and figure out a better way to express themselves, and Hollywood in particular. I also agree that it seems that Christianity is the only religion that is acceptable to take potshots at. Maybe we need to have our own ad campaigns against bigotry and hate.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it seems okay to make fun of Christians, but any other religion and you are a hater or intolerant!!
ReplyDeleteThe language thing is just sad and too bad. People just don't think of the f word as bad anymore
It is really sad
Brett
We are in for it.
ReplyDeleteHe says we need only be still though...and I'm planning on it.
I have not seen the movie and surely won't.
I have not seen it yet but you are so right about us walking on our tip toes so that we do not offend other religions...just seems ridiculous! I probably won't go to see this one...It has been a while since I have seen a really well written movie. Thanks for the review..saves me a couple of dollars that I can put in to fixing my basement!
ReplyDeleteI have not seen the movie, but I do not think you're being overly sensitive. Our convictions come from the Holy Spirit living within us and we are to live like Him. I have to agree that it's okay for society to make fun of Christians and Jesus Christ, but any other religion is "protected" if you know what I mean. I don't understand why people can't talk without using some form of swear word - it's quite sad!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I hope you have a wonderful day :)
Hugs to you!
Hello Susan,
ReplyDeleteWe must just say no to these Hollywood faith bashing movies.
No you are not overly sensitive. Praise God we are not seared yet!
Thanks for the warning!
Blessings, Roxy
Don't think I will be seeing that one! I am so tired of every movie having the F word in it! C'mom most people never use that word, ever! To bad it sure looked like a great cast!
ReplyDeleteThank you for telling us about the movie. Now I definitely don't want to go see that one.
ReplyDeleteI am SO glad you wrote this post Susan. I haven't seen the movie, but I just hate it when I see any church getting beat up on. I thought society was over this. I'm sure that I probably won't care for the movie for the same reasons you didn't.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend Susan!
hugs...
Thanks for your review...I think I will pass on this movie.
ReplyDeleteOH dear...I wanted to see this movie but NOT NOW! Thanks for your review; I won't waste my $$$.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's sad that Christians tend to be portrayed in movies as being overly judgemental zealots or as crazy fanatics. (Most of us aren't that way--I promise!)
