Now They're Cool

I was one of the lucky ones in fifth grade.

I flunked the vision test given at school by the county nurse. This was back in the day when the nurses in their white uniforms would show up- not to do lice checks, like they do now- but for vision and hearing checks. And the occasional school bus trip to the "big" school where we lined up in long rows and tried not to cry in front of our classmates when those same nurses gave us our vaccinations. Ouch.

I must admit I was a little excited about the possibility of wearing glasses then. That good feeling lasted about 24 hours. From then on, my eyes are instantly drawn to my glasses (she says in a sarcastic tone)  in every school picture -not the adorable little outfit my mom sewed up for me or my new perm with the short little bangs.

Winnie is actually wearing glasses that look more like the ones my grandma wore than mine at this age, but you get the idea.

Since then, I've suffered through lots of trials wearing contact lenses with no luck and many pairs of glasses. Ugly glasses. Cute glasses. Slightly-crooked-on-my-face glasses. Digging-into-my-nose-glasses. And sore-ear-glasses.

Now however, I am embracing my inner geek and claiming my nearsightedness.

And my bifocalness.

I am cheering that thanks to fashionistas like these in their cute specs, wearing glasses is now fashionable. Eyeglasses make a STATEMENT. And  add that certain "something" to a person's overall look.

I'm in the market for a new pair of glasses, and I've promised myself that I am NOT going to drive an hour and 15 minutes one way to find the perfect pair. I did that last time, and even though it has worked out fine and I do LOVE my old pair, it is just silly.

I don't have time to do that.

What if I need an adjustment or have problems? Too inconvenient.

The main reason though is that I WAY OVERPAID for my last pair. I don't keep financial secrets from my farmer husband, but he would CROAK if he knew how much I paid for the pair on my nose right now.

Thankfully, he never asked. And I didn't offer the info. And snatched the credit card bill and paid it before he saw it.

This time, I 'm going to give Warby Parker glasses a try! This is an online company, with a few brick and mortar locations, that is doing the glasses thing a new way.

Here are some reasons the company appeals to me:

1. adorable frames
2. free shipping and returns
3. adorable frames
4. can test drive 5 pairs at a time to see which ones I like
5. adorable frames
6. reasonable prices
7. adorable frames
8. one pair given to someone in need for every pair purchased-so far a million pair
9. adorable frames
10. can still support my local optometrist with my eye exam

Their new Winter 2014 line is going to be revealed today and I will have NO PROBLEM finding 5 pairs that I can't wait to try.

So, how about you? What is your glasses story? Have you ordered from Warby Parker? Would you? Go check them out and let me know which pair is your favorite!

  1. I probably wouldn't. Thankfully I have vision insurance so I don't pay that much, except for some options that aren't available online (like super duper thin lenses ... I'm so nearsighted that normal thickness lenses look like Coke bottle bottoms). Plus my face is narrow and my features rather small so I have a hard time finding frames that don't overpower my face. My optometrist's office staff have to special order frames for me ... or help me choose from the children's frames. But I realize that I'm an unusual case. I'll keep them in mind for my husband who is a more "typical" optometric consumer. ;-)

  2. I have not ordered glasses online. I can see close up but need glasses for driving and at night I wear glasses. I got them in 5th grade also and had "cat eye" frames for a lot of years. ugh....lol I wore contacts for 30+ years and loved them..but kind of gave up wearing them when I quit working.

Good luck- can't wait to see the "new you" in your new specs. xo Diana

  3. I loathed my glasses until I was 18 and got contact lenses. I wore them all the the time. It really has only been lately that I actually go out of the house in my glasses! And we don't have insurance so I just get the cheapest possible.

  4. Hi Susan, How are you? I will check out this site as our son had just got new glasses and he got them terribly scratched while hunting!
Happy November to you and yours!

  5. I have ordered from Warby Parker many times and have always been happy. The orders have been for me, my oldest son, and my daughter. My son even has a pair of their sunglasses. I love the FREE five day home try on. It really helps us choose the exact frames. :). Happy shopping!

  6. I have never ordered glasses online but had some snags ordering in person this past time so it might be worth a try. I grew up without them but as I have gotten, ahem, a bit older the reading became a bit harder and well, here we are. There are so many cute styles out there now and the "kids" are wearing what used to be referred to as "nerd" glasses as the newest trend. Even kids who don't wear them want them. I guess it's more fun when it's for fashion's sake and not for reading the fine print on the package : )

  7. I've ordered glasses online as well as from my opticians. Since I wear glasses every day, I like to have a variety and it is a fashion statement! My opticians have even re-adjusted the arms of my frames that I purchased from another company online. I'm very thankful for that! I like the idea of testing 5 pairs before purchase. And the pairs given to people in need is a huge bonus!

  8. What beautiful thoughts! I've had trouble adjusting to glasses back when I was first checked for my vision. It was really a love-hate relationship, until I realized at some point while I was growing up that my glasses are already a part of what I am and I should embrace them in totality. Anyway, good for you for finding the perfect solution to your glasses woes. Thank you so much for sharing! Stay beautiful, Susan!

  9. My glasses are the first thing I reach for in the morning. I think that sentence sums up my relationship with my glasses. I remember as a kid when I would burst into my parent's room to tell my mom something and she would say, "Wait. Let me put on my glasses so I can HEAR you better." I didn't understand it then, but trust me, I understand it now. Glasses can be quite pricey. Thankfully I do have insurance but honestly my last pair I paid nearly nothing for from Firmoo.com through a blogging opportunity. They are cute and aren't as sturdy as my usual pairs, but they are a great alternative. But from that experience, I learned that I can save more money by looking at online vendors. :-)

  10. I too love that wearing glasses has become so cool and don't believe you have to pay a lot for them. I have to wear glasses for reading and work and I also think they look marvellous! Today you can get so many different frames that come in a variety of patterns, shapes and colours. I am also due for a new pair and curious to see what the new styles look like. I will certainly visit the recommended site.

  11. My glass story is very similar to yours, I can totally relate. I always wanted to wear spectacles as a young boy but when I landed my first pair the experience was underwhelming. I remember the lenses were so big that they covered my whole cheek. Fast forward thirty years I now have pairs of fashionable glasses thanks to Glenmore Landing Vision center.
