Reality Slap X 50

We got back from our trip to Florida late Monday night with a huge slap of reality.

A slap in the form of 6 inches of water in our finished basement.

Can you say "aggravated" with me?

We left over a week ago in a terrible rainstorm which apparently resulted in a lightning strike which took out our sump pump, cable, internet, big screen TV, and we don't even know what else yet.

So....everything in the basement has set in water for over a week.

Not good.

This was almost as surprising as the time we came home from vacation and a great big white labrador  greeted us when we walked into the kitchen.

And we didn't have a great big white lab.

Yes, our house was broken into by a dog. We left a window open and he ripped the screen and it was obvious that he had jumped in....

....and out

.....several times.

We still laugh about that one and are amazed that he didn't tear up anything else-just got dog hair all over the furniture.

But let's not focus on negative things, OK?

For the next 10 minutes, I am going to put my fingers in my ears and sing, "la,la,la, la, la," pretend it didn't happen, and share these pics I took at the Seaside Farmer's Market on Saturday morning.

When I didn't know things were floating in water in our basement back home.

And the sun was shining brightly.

And the day stretched ahead of us full of promise........

Enough of the drama!

Hope YOU are having a dry day at your lovely place!

Do you have any returning-from-vacation horror stories?

  1. What a cute post, Susan, although I'm terribly sorry about your basement. The lab in your house, how funny. Nope, no excitement like that around here!

    Hope you are staying warm!

  2. So sorry to hear about your basement! We came home to a kitchen full of gnats after vacation. Someone left a can full of pop on the counter. It was horrible! Hope everything works out for you.

  4. Your pictures are so beautiful! I wanted to jump into my computer screen and eat the cookies.

So sorry to hear about your basement...yikes!!!

I laughed out loud that you were greeted by a dog you didn't have. Talk about making oneself at home!! Is he still hanging around?

  7. I can relate, we have come home to the same situation, although the basement isn't finished, we still had a terrible mess to clean up and a lot of things to throw away!
Another time we took a week long trip and failed to alert our dear elderly neighbor. We had a rattletrap car at the time so we rented a van for the trip. He saw no activity and the car unmoved for a week and fearing the worst he called the police and had them break into the house to look for bodies! Fortunately, ther weren't any. lol.
He was chagrined when he came clean about it, but we assured him there were no hard feelings and had a good laugh about it for a long time.

i am sure the dog probably did some damage as well, but you have to admit it is kind of funny that a strange dog broke into your house

  11. You guys did not deserve that!!!
I hope insurance takes care of it all!
I do have a story...a boy I dated once said his parents and brother took a trip and let him stay home that week with their husky dog.
The dog died and he panicked because he didn't want to bury it with them not getting to say goodbye (haha!) No cell phones then, you know and he wasn't going to talk to them I guess for a few days...he put the dog in the chest freezer in the garage. WEllll...he was at school when they got home and mom went to get some meat to thaw for supper... :) I think you know the rest!

  14. Susan, I hate that your basement flooded. We have a basement too, a constant worry for me. We could go south for the winter, but would need a house sitter. I always worry the power will be knock out and our pump would not work either. You can get a battery powered one for those instances..but I do not know how long the battery would last. One more reason I want to move back to town. I wish you luck with clean up and repairs. You are way calmer than I would be. xoxo,Susie

  15. Beautiful pics! Hope things are dried out at your house soon... sorry you had to experience that... think the white lab caper was better. :)

  16. Bless your heart! We have just now become empty nesters. We used to travel when our children were young, but then slowed down when we moved to the country. I started "collecting chickens". Now our son is graduating Naval school and we are going to see him. I have to haul all of my chickens out to a friend who will baby sit them and I have to board my array of several cats, a dog and a bird. I have a lot of anxiety over what will happen while we are gone. We live 30 miles out away from any town and any human. I just have to have faith that God will watch over it all. Hope you get every thing restored and back to normal.

  18. All your photos of the fresh produce look wonderful!! I am so sorry that you arrived home to such an unwelcoming surprise. How is the clean-up going? 6 inches...that a lot of water. I hope you didn't lose a lot down there...I'm thinking about all your walls and your carpets...yikes!
